With the pain of their Championship series loss against the Corio Bay Stingrays still clearly on their minds, the Ringwood Hawks have made a signing they hope will give them the edge they need in the 2014 Big V season.
The Hawks have been the envy of most Big V Clubs in recent years, due to the ability to find talented imports players that fit in to the Australian game and way of life. And with their latest signing, Hawks Head Coach Ken Harrington believes he has found another one.
“We are very excited to announce that Marcus Ruh from Saint Leo University has signed with us and is set to arrive early February.” Harrington said.
Wisconsin born Ruh, a 6’4 guard/forward, will come to Australia boasting a host of impressive accolades that he has won on and off the court at Saint Leo University, a very well respected College in Florida.
Ruh (pronounced Roo) had a stellar two seasons at Saint Leo, culminating in his 17ppg senior season on a Lions team that were ranked in the top 20 in the national rankings. The versatile Ruh also grabbed nearly 6 rebounds a game and dished out close to 3 assists. He also made the Lions 1000 point Club despite only playing two seasons.
With his impressive on court achievements, it can be easy to miss his most impressive award. Ruh, who was a straight A student, was awarded the Capitol one Academic All-American Player of the Year.
“We look for smart kids who can play basketball.” Harrington said
“Marcus ticks all the boxes we look at and will be a great asset next season.”
As for Ruh, he can barely wait to start his professional Basketball career in a Country he says would have been his first choice of anywhere in the World.
“I remember telling my parents that Australia would be my first choice because I have heard nothing but good things about it.” Ruh explained.
“But I am very grateful to Coach Harrington who has been straight forward and enthusiastic about having me as part of their organization.”
With Ruh now safely secured and heading 12000km across the globe, what can Hawks fans expect to see from him when he hits the court in green and white.
“I’d like to think I bring toughness, consistency and leadership. I think I shoot the ball pretty well and still create shots for my teammates.”
“I will do whatever it takes to help my team win, I just hate losing.”
The Hawks hope to announce some further signings in the coming weeks.
